What we compare

Four covers that each protect a different risk.

Most people need some combination of these, and the right mix depends on your situation and how comprehensive you want the cover to be.

Pays a lump sum

Life cover

Pays a lump sum when you pass away, or if you're diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Its purpose is to clear the mortgage and other debts, cover funeral expenses, replace lost income, or simply leave a lump sum to your family or chosen beneficiary.

Pays a lump sum

TPD cover

Total and Permanent Disability cover pays a lump sum if illness or injury means you're unlikely to work again.

Similar in purpose to Life cover. Clients take TPD cover for the same reasons: paying off debt and replacing lost income.

Worth knowing: when you apply for cover you can usually choose how “unable to work again” is defined — either by your Own Occupation or Any Occupation.

Pays a lump sum

Trauma cover

Also called critical illness cover. Pays a lump sum when you're diagnosed with a serious condition listed in the policy — the most commonly claimed are cancer, heart attack and stroke.

Importantly, you don't have to stop working to claim on trauma cover. Policies generally cover 30 or more conditions, though the list and how each is defined differs by insurer.

Pays a monthly benefit

Income protection

Pays a monthly benefit of up to 70% of your income while illness or injury keeps you off work.

You choose the waiting period and the benefit period, which lets you balance how comprehensive the cover is against the premium you pay.

Who we help

Different lives, different cover.

Generally the clients we speak to have a mortgage, a family depending on them, or are self-employed. We also assist business owners with buy/sell and key person cover.

Families

Your family's lifestyle runs on your income. Cover keeps that going if you can't.

  • Life and TPD cover clears the mortgage so nobody has to sell the house.
  • Income protection keeps the bills paid while you're off work.
  • Trauma cover provides a tax-free lump sum you can use for medical expenses, or simply a bit of breathing space while you focus on recovery.

Self-employed

No sick leave, no safety net. You've built something that depends on you turning up.

  • Income protection matters most when there's no employer behind you.
  • A monthly benefit that helps cover the bills and living expenses while you're off work.
  • Income protection premiums are generally tax-deductible at your marginal tax rate.

Business owners

Your business depends on a small number of people. Cover keeps it running if one of them can't.

  • Business expenses cover reimburses the fixed costs of running the business — rent, utilities, leases, loan repayments, staff wages — while you’re off work through illness or injury, so the doors stay open until you’re back.
  • Key person cover pays the business a lump sum when someone critical to revenue can't work, covering lost profit, recruitment, and the time a replacement takes to get up to speed.
  • Buy/sell cover funds the transfer of a departing owner's share if they die or become seriously ill — so the remaining owners keep control, and the departing owner's family receives fair value rather than a share they can't sell.

Comparing existing cover

You may already have a policy, taken out personally or through your super, that you'd like to compare.

  • Premiums often increase each year with age, and insurers can raise their rates in response to claims experience.
  • Default cover inside super is rarely tailored, and is often capped below what you may need.
  • Your circumstances may have changed — more or less debt, improved health, or a change in occupation.

Questions

The things people ask us most.

Do I need all four covers?

Some people simply want to leave a lump sum for their family if they pass away. Others want full protection against death, disability and other serious health events that could take time out of your life, whether that's short or long term.

Which covers you take comes down to how comprehensive you want the policy to be, and what you can comfortably afford in premiums.

What if I already have cover through my super?

Many Australians have default cover inside their super. If you feel that may not be enough, or you want something more comprehensive, you can take out additional cover — or simply compare what you already hold against our panel of insurers.

How much cover do I need?

There's no standard figure. For Life and TPD cover, people generally want to clear the mortgage and other debts, and leave either a lump sum or a replacement income for their family.

For Trauma cover there's no right or wrong amount either, but we generally see clients insure for around two to three years of income — enough to cover the mortgage or extra medical expenses while they recover.

Income protection can generally cover up to 70% of your income. You choose how long you wait before the benefit starts (commonly 30, 60 or 90 days) and how long it pays for — two years, five years, or to age 65.

What will it cost?

Premiums are based on your age, health, occupation, the amount of cover and the options you choose, so the premium will be different for everyone.

After a short conversation we can provide you with quotes and work with you to adjust the levels of cover to what you feel is appropriate, before proceeding to an application.

Can I pay the premiums through my superannuation or SMSF?

Yes — Life, TPD and income protection can generally be paid from super or an SMSF. Trauma cover cannot.

Paying through super protects your cash flow but reduces your retirement balance, so it's a trade-off worth considering. Premiums paid through superannuation can also work out around 15% cheaper, because the fund is generally able to claim a tax deduction.

Generally speaking, clients who have limited cash flow to pay for the insurance will use their super to fund it.

Are premiums tax deductible?

Income protection premiums paid personally are generally tax deductible at your marginal tax rate, and can be claimed through your tax return — whether you lodge it yourself or through your accountant.

Will I have to go through medical tests?

Not always. If you’re applying for a high level of cover, or you have certain pre-existing conditions, the insurer may ask for a health check. That usually means a blood test, a urine test, and height and weight measurements.

There’s no cost to you and the insurer arranges it. A mobile nurse comes to your home or workplace, any day of the week.

It’s worth knowing that insurers who underwrite with medical testing generally offer more comprehensive cover with fewer pre-set exclusions than those who don’t, so being asked for a health check isn’t a negative.

How are you paid?

We're paid a commission by the insurer when a policy is taken out. You don't pay us a fee directly.

You can find more information about how we're paid in Financial Services Guide Part 2.
